Important Instructions to Follow Before Your Intravenous Anesthesia Sedation
► Refrain from ingesting any food or drink including water for a full eight hours before your scheduled surgery. Your stomach should be completely empty upon arrival.
► Refrain from using any nicotine products for at least twelve hours prior to your scheduled surgery. If possible, stop using nicotine products well in advance.
► You must be accompanied by another adult individual. Your chosen caretaker should arrive with you, stay in our office for the duration of your procedure, and then drive you home.
► You will not be allowed to drive yourself home. Even though the anesthesia will wear off, you are still considered to be “under the influence” well after the procedure. As such, you should not operate a vehicle or any heavy machinery for at least 24 hours after your surgery.
► Dress comfortably! Avoid any tight clothing on the day of your surgery. Wear loose-fitting clothing, making sure that your sleeves can easily be rolled up to your elbow. Do not wear high heels – choose comfortable, low-heel shoes.
► If you wear contacts, make sure to bring your contact case with you and the necessary saline solution. You will be asked to remove your contacts prior to surgery. You will also be asked to remove any jewelry and dentures.
► Arrive with clean skin! Avoid wearing makeup of any kind and remove any nail polish from your nails prior to your scheduled surgery.
► If you are feeling ill on the day of your surgery, it is best to call the office to let us know. Feeling ill includes a cold, a sore throat, or an upset stomach. Your surgery may need to be rescheduled.
► Some medications have known adverse reactions with anesthesia. Please inform your surgeon about any medications you take on a routine basis.
